UNE Maine Geriatric Education Center offers educational training programs for Maine's health care professionals: "Preparing for the Future: Alzheimer's Disease & Related Dementias"
The UNE Maine Geriatric Education Center (UNE-MGEC), directed by Judith Metcalf, APRN, BC, MS, will hold the second of five statewide educational trainings for health professionals in Maine on Saturday, June 15, 2013, at the Harborside Hotel (Bar Harbor Club) in Bar Harbor, Maine. The training is titled "Preparing for the Future: Alzheimer's Disease & Related Dementias."
The first of such trainings was held by the UNE-MGEC on March 13th at the Hilton Garden Inn in Freeport. Over 100 health professionals from Maine attended. Keynote speakers included Lawrence Ramunno, MD,MPH, FAAFP, CDE, chief quality officer of Northeast Health Care Quality Foundation; Clifford Singer, MD, chief, geriatric neuropsychiatry, Acadia Hospital and Eastern Maine Medical Center; Roger Renfrew, MD, FACP, medical director at Redington Medical Primary Care, and Alireza Atri, MD, PhD, associate director, Clinical Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) ENRM VA, Bedford, MA.
The training program agenda included the following topics:
- Using the Triple Aim to Provide Affordable, Accessible, and Quality Care for Alzheimer's Disease
- Guidelines for Clinical Practice--Models of Team Care Coordination for Office Practices
- Pharmacological Management of Agitation in Dementia
- Early Onset Dementia in Intellectual Disability Diagnosis and Management
- Elder Investment Fraud and Financial Exploitation (EIFFE)
- For Providers- Important Questions to Address and Resources to Refer to Patients and Families
- Latest in Alzheimer's Disease Clinical Trials and How to Refer Patients
- Skills Stations for Effective Geriatric Screening for Office Practices
- Health Literacy
- Advance Care Planning through End of Life Care
These trainings were made possible by a supplemental funding award to the UNE-Maine GEC from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The grant was awarded for the purpose of providing complimentary Alzheimer disease education trainings to health professionals in Maine.
