‘Journal Tribune’ features article on James Sulikowski’s NOAA grant research on scallops
The June 28-29, 2014 weekend edition of the Journal Tribune featured a front page article titled “UNE to conduct scallop study,” which discusses research being performed by James Sulikowski, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Marine Sciences, and his colleagues, through a $1.6 million grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
To collect data for the study, 12 UNE undergraduate and graduate marine sciences students will go on week-long excursions with fishermen over a two-year period. The students will take scallops that normally would be discarded, simulate their normal living conditions, and record survival rates.
“The findings from this study will contribute to better management of this incredibly valuable resource and help invigorate the scallop fisher here in Maine,” said Sulikowski. In the article, he notes that the scallop industry is “the most important fishery on the East Coast” and that last year “was the biggest scallop year” for Maine, with the industry valued at $5 million, the highest in 15 years.
