Kennebunk Post features UNE’s Julia Robinson Math Festival for fifth-graders

The front page of the June 6, 2014, issue of the Kennebunk Post displayed photos from and a write-up on the Julia Robinson Math Festival, held at UNE on Friday, May 30th for RSU 21 fifth-graders.

More than 250 students visited the university to engage in hands-on math activities and STEM (science, technology, math and engineering) experiences under the guidance of trained mentors, including UNE students and faculty. 

Activities  included math sessions (“Can You Spell Numbers?” and “Discovery of Euler’s Formula with Polydrons;”)  a session on genetics and fruit flies; neuroanatomy lessons centered around sheep brain dissections; brain injury awareness and prevention sessions; helmet fitting lessons and demonstrations; and interactive marine sciences lessons comprised of  hands-on activities with shark jaws, body features, and senses, microscope viewings of larval fish, and touch tanks with sturgeon, skates, and local invertebrates.
