Dr. Jon Ryder promoted to executive associate dean, College of Dental Medicine

Dr. Jon Ryder has been promoted to the position of executive associate dean in the College of Dental Medicine. Ryder joined the UNE family in June 2013 and most recently has served as assistant dean for Academic Affairs.   

He earned his B.A. in Asian studies and philosophy at Augustana College, completed his Doctorate of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, and is completing an M.S. in Oral Facial Pain and Oral Medicine at the University of California, Ostrow School of Dentistry in May 2015.

Ryder has had advanced training in occlusion, operative dentistry, aesthetic dentistry, implant surgical/restorative dentistry, and hospital dentistry emergency and trauma. In addition to membership in the American Dental Education Association and the American Dental Association, he is an associate fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and a fellow of the International College of Oral Implantologists. He has also received advanced training in CAD-CAM technology.

Ryder served as an adjunct faculty member for twelve years at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, owned and operated two dental practices in Iowa for 10 years, and worked with two dental schools in Cambodia, participating in the design of the first dental simulation clinic in Cambodia at the University of Puthisastra. 

He has been licensed to practice dentistry in Iowa, Singapore, Cambodia, New Zealand and now Maine.  He has been very active in humanitarian volunteer work around the world.

In his new role, Ryder’s primary responsibilities will include supporting the dean in developing, implementing and evaluating the college’s academic, patient care and public service activities and programs.  He will also act as the school’s senior level administrator in the dean’s absence. 

In addition, working with appropriate groups and individuals, he will directly oversee the activities of the offices of Academic and Clinical Affairs, including outcomes assessment, curriculum management, quality assurance and admissions; oversee the development and application of policies and procedures for the college; provide input into financial, space, personnel and other resource needs of the college; coordinate activities related to faculty hiring, faculty development and the annual review and RPT process; provide guidance for the college’s accreditation process; serve as ex-officio member of appropriate college committees; and represent the college with various internal and external constituencies.
