James Sulikowski answers questions about sharks on Frank FM’s ‘Morning Show’
James Sulikowski, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Marine Sciences, was featured as a guest on radio channel 107.5 Frank FM’s “Morning Show” on July 9, 2015.
Sulikowski discussed the recent shark sightings in Maine and the public fear that has grown in the wake of several East Coast shark attacks this summer.
He assured listeners that shark attacks on humans are extremely unusual. “When you go in the water, you have a very slight chance of being attacked by a shark,” he explained. When asked by the show hosts what people should do if they spot a shark in the water, he recommended taking in the rare experience. “If you see a shark, the best thing to do is just to soak it up,” he said.
Sulikowski also discussed current studies that he is conducting along with undergraduate students on porbeagle sharks, relatives of white sharks, in the Gulf of Maine. He and the students are using tagging devices to track baby porbeagles. “One of the nice things about UNE is that you have this really amazing undergraduate program that gets involved in the research,” he shared.
