UNE’s Community Therapy Center gives presentation on concussion rehab

On November 17, 2015 the UNE Community Therapy Center (CTC) hosted a presentation on concussion rehabilitation, sharing expertise from University of New England faculty and alumni.

The CTC partnered with Southern Maine Health care for the event titled, “Comprehensive Concussion Rehab Program: From Return to Sports to Return to Life.” It was the first installment of a two part planned series. Audience members included students, athletes, parents, coaches, guidance counselors, teachers, school nurses and other community stakeholders.

The panelists provided specific insight into their professional roles and practice areas as it relates to the individual care and programming that occurs for clients following a concussion. Additionally, they highlighted the importance of an interprofessional and collaborative team approach for students and athletes related to the progressive return to both academics and athletics.

Presenters included occupational therapist and assistant clinical professor in the UNE Health, Wellness and Occupational Studies undergraduate program Caroline Beals, M.S., OTR/L, neurologist John Dolan, UNECOM ‘96, occupational therapist and UNE adjunct faculty member Shelby Hutchinson, M.S. OTR/L, Vinny Martin, P.T., D.P.T., Kaitlyn McCarter, LATC UNE ‘11, on behalf of the SMHC Sport Performance Center, Tim Mousette P.T., D.P.T., Amy Robertson, P.T., D.P.T. UNE ‘07, neuropsychologist Laura Slap-Shelton and Brooke White, SLP-CCC. SMHC Rehab Manager Gina Mosher, OTR/L and Elizabeth Crampsey, M.S., OTR/L, BCPR coordinator of the Community Therapy Center coordinated the series.

The second presentation will be geared toward health care professionals and aspiring health care professional students. It will be held on Wednesday, January 27 at 6 p.m. on the Biddeford campus.
