Kristin Burkholder co-authors book chapter on ‘Opportunistic Pathogens of Humans’

Kristin Burkholder, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Biology, co-authored a chapter in the recently published book The Rasputin Effect: When Commensals and Symbionts Become Parasitic, which focuses on instances when normally benign interactions between host and microbe change and become detrimental to the host.

Written with Mary O’Riordan, Ph.D., University of Michigan, the chapter is titled “Opportunistic Pathogens of Humans.” It explores the emergence of opportunistic infections as a public health threat in hospitals and communities. Burkholder and O’Riordan highlight the unique virulence strategies of opportunistic pathogens and discuss the impact of drug resistance on infection control.

The text, edited by Christon Hurst, Ph.D., of Xavier University, was published by Springer and is the third volume in the series Advances in Environmental Microbiology.
