UNE's Office of Admissions endorses “Turning the Tide” report

University of New England

The University of New England’s Office of Admissions has offered support for the Turning the Tide report, produced by the Making Caring Common Project at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. This work, developed in collaboration with the Education Conservancy, provides concrete recommendations on how to reshape the college admissions process. It is currently backed by admissions offices from more than 140 prestigious colleges and universities.

The report originated from an exploratory meeting with admission deans, college presidents, scholars and high school representatives. Written by Richard Weissbourd in partnership with Lloyd Thacker, Director of the Education Conservancy, it suggests that the admissions process should be refined to promote greater ethical engagement among aspiring students, reduce excessive achievement pressure and level the playing field for economically disadvantaged students.

Many supporters of the report have already pledged to implement changes in their respective admissions departments, including revising application essay questions and developing high school community engagement programs.

Turning the Tide is the first step in a two-year campaign designed to reshape the current college admissions process.
