The journal, Hispania has published an article by two University of New England College of Arts and Sciences faculty members that addresses the importance of community-based civic education in 21st century curricula.

The article was written by Steven Byrd, Ph.D., associate professor of Spanish and Portuguese and director of the Latin American Studies Minor and Samuel McReynolds, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Society, Culture and Languages. In particular, it examines the pedagogical philosophies of John Dewey and Paulo Freire as worthy of revisiting by school faculty and administrations in designing their curricula for foreign language and cultural education.

The article was selected for Hispania's special centenary edition, which features visionary essays for 21st century foreign language and cultural courses and curricula.
