Leah Soloway and Caleb Pulliam recognized in ‘Press Herald’ article on Manomet internships
Leah Soloway (Environmental Studies and Business ’18) and Caleb Pulliam (Environmental Studies ’19) were recognized in an April 9 Portland Press Herald article about the Manomet U360 sustainability in business internship program in which they both participate and which recently received the Press Herald's 2017 Source Teacher Award.
Manomet is a non-profit organization that works with private industry, other non-profits and governmental partners to create a more sustainable world. To aid in Manomet’s Root360, an initiative designed to help small businesses in Maine and New England focus on sustainability, the organization created U360, an internship for college students interested in sustainability issues.
Soloway and Pulliam enrolled in internship courses this semester through the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Internship Office, which has a contract and sub-grant with Manomet for internships that offer student stipends, and they were both hired as sustainable economies program associates for the U360 program.
The article describes the tasks assigned to Soloway, Pulliam and their fellow interns: to seek out 60 diverse, small businesses to take part in the Root360 program and to create and present an action plan to the owner of one of those businesses.
Although it was originally nominated for the Source Newcomer Award, judges decided that the U360 program was most impactful in a teaching capacity.
