UNE’s College of Arts and Sciences to hold 2017 Summer Undergraduate Research Experience Symposium

On Saturday, September 30, UNE’s College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) will host its annual Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) Symposium. The event celebrates the work performed over the summer by undergraduate students who received SURE funding for research purposes.

More than 30 students who worked closely with CAS faculty, building on their coursework and exploring advanced realms within their fields of study over the summer months, will present their research projects at the symposium, now in its sixth year. Students from a wide variety of disciplines will participate. The focus of their projects ranges from identifying species of bog lemmings by studying pellets, to examining the effects of photoperiod and light intensity on microalgal growth rates, to researching metacognitive ability and the preference for traditional textbooks as compared to e-readers. These projects are the basis for future scholarly work in the field of research through articles, presentations, manuscripts and more.

“The CAS SURE Symposium is the culmination of a summer’s worth of work for these students,” said Charles Tilburg, Ph.D., professor and associate dean in CAS. “Here, they get to show off the new skills that they have learned, the new knowledge that they have gained and the new discoveries that they have made.  It is exciting and humbling to see what these remarkable students have accomplished during their summer here at UNE.”

The symposium, which will be held in the Multi-Purpose Rooms of the Campus Center, will begin at 9 a.m. with poster presentations. College of Arts and Sciences Dean Jeanne Hey will give a welcome address at 10:30 a.m., followed by an address from President James Herbert. Oral presentations will then commence and will run until noon.
