Dean Jane Carreiro recognized for role in expanding osteopathic-focused graduate medical education

University of New England Vice President for Health Affairs and Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine, Jane E. Carreiro, D.O., was recognized by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for her contributions to the Inaugural Osteopathic Recognition Committee (OPC).

Established in 2015, the OPC has played a critical role in the merger of osteopathic and ACGME residency programs by setting the standards by which residency training programs may establish distinctly osteopathic tracks. Carreiro was appointed to the ACGME Osteopathic Working Group in 2014, and subsequently to the OPC. She served on the OPC executive committee from 2015-2017 and was charged with assisting in the development of osteopathic milestones appropriate for all interested ACGME specialties. The ACGME milestone project is a critical formative component of the outcomes based process created with the single accreditation system.  

To date, almost two hundred ACGME programs ranging from primary care, to radiology to surgery have been recognized by the OPC. Through the establishment of the OPC and the standards setting for osteopathic recognition, both M.D. and D.O. graduates can now benefit from osteopathic-focused graduate medical education in all disciplines.
