An article in the August 2016 issue of Boston Magazine references a study on dogfish at the University of New England’s Center for Excellence in Marine Sciences. The article, titled, “Cod is Dead – Is Dogfish the Answer?” explores the abundance of dogfish and how fisheries and marine researchers are looking for ways to utilize the species.

The article discusses a quarter-million-dollar grant UNE received in conjunction with the Cape Cod Commercial Fisherman’s Alliance to study dogfish market development. It also quotes James Sulikowski, Ph.D., professor of marine science, who explained their reproductive behavior. “There’s no time off—as soon as they give birth, they start over again,” he said. “They’re like little machines.”
