UNE volunteers help promote brain injury prevention at Saco’s Pumpkin Harvest Festival
Students, faculty and staff from UNE recently volunteered at the 18th annual Saco Pumpkin Harvest Festival, working with the Michael T. Goulet Traumatic Injury and Epilepsy Foundation, to fit and distribute helmets.
The foundation is named in honor of Michael Goulet, who passed away in 2010 after suffering a Grand Mal seizure. Its mission is to raise awareness for prevention and to improve the lives of patients and families affected by traumatic brain injury and epilepsy disorders.
The foundation distributed more than 300 hundred free helmets at the event and provided information on how to properly wear them.
UNE Volunteers included members of the Center for Excellence in the Neurosciences (CEN) Michael Burman, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology, and Jennifer Malon, M.S., M.P.H., COBRE program coordinator, as well as students Makaela Rice (Neuroscience, ’19), Victoria Eaton (Neuroscience, ’18) and Julie Moulton (CAS, ’20).
Members of CEN are trained in proper helmet fitting. They frequently assist the foundation with helmet giveaways.
