Water Rights Teach-in

This teach-in will educate students, faculty, and staff about the consequences concerning large-scale water extraction and bottling in Maine.  

It will include an overview of a newly introduced bill (LD 1077) to increase "Public Participation in Large-scale Extraction and Transportation of Water Decisions" in Augusta. This bill was created by Food & Water Watch, a non-profit that works to ensure the food, water and fish we consume is safe, accessible and sustainable.

Presenters

Lynne Williams is an attorney who practices land use and environmental law.  She is an expert on water rights and has worked with many community groups who are seeking to protect their aquifers from large scale water extraction.

Nisha Swinton is the organizer for Food & Water Watch in Maine. She organizes local communities and campuses throughout Maine who are caught in the intersection of big business and the public’s right to water. She also is working to establish groundwater protection law in Maine.
