12:00 pm - 1:30 pm
Ludcke Auditorium (PC)/Commons 320 (BC)
Portland Campus, Biddeford Campus
Co-Presented by: Jennifer Lee Morton, DNP, MPH, APHN-BC and Trisha Mason, MA

The immersion experience (in late May to June) brings together health professions students in Ghana for a life-changing interprofessional service learning experience. Participants work alongside the Ghana Health Service, Community Health Educators, and the community. Participants engage in direct health services, interprofessional collaboration, community education, and academic and cross-cultural exchange. Through this program, students broaden their world view and begin the process of becoming culturally sensitive health professionals.

Learner Objectives:

1.      Describe global health care goals and ways in which to become a more globally proficient provider
2.      Describe healthcare differences between Ghana and United States
3.      Describe how roles and responsibilities vary between professions from differing health care paradigms
4.      Describe the value of the Community Health Worker role in translation and navigation
5.      Describe how short term health care immersion experiences can enhance one’s progress on the cultural competency continuum
