Scott D. Richards, PA-C, PhD (ABD), DFAAPA

Assistant Professor

Initially trained in anthropology, graduating with Magna Cum Laude honors from the University of Massachusetts, Boston, Mr. Richards completed his PA studies at Hahnemann University, Philadelphia in 1994, passing his PA Boards with special recognition in both surgery and primary care. Since that time, he has worked in both very rural and inner-city medical settings, providing care to underserved populations. Mr. Richards has established a reputation for providing high quality, comprehensive medical care to patients in the greatest need for services; and, throughout his career, has emphasized behavioral medicine/psychiatry in his medical practices. He previously established and implemented a volunteer clinic for migrant workers in Northern California, has volunteered in clinics for homeless persons in Philadelphia, Northern California, and Lewiston, Maine, and has also worked with refugee patients, first in Northern California and, for the past 10 years, in the Auburn/Lewiston, Maine areas.

Mr. Richards has received numerous awards for his service. In 2009, in recognition of his significant academic achievement and community and professional service, Scott was inducted into Pi Alpha, the national physician assistant honor society. Also in 2009, he was awarded Distinguished Fellow status in the American Academy of Physician Assistants. While in Northern California, Scott received a State of California Senate Certificate of Recognition for service in Del Norte County, a Certificate of Recognition for Outstanding Service to Community Award, and a Certificate of Recognition for Outstanding Achievement & Contribution Award by the Regional Migrant Education Association.

 

Mr. Richards is presently nearing completion of his Clinical Psychology PhD, having completed his didactic and internship training with focus on integrative psychodynamic psychotherapy with mindfulness based cognitive behavioral therapy techniques, spiritual psychotherapy, psychometric assessment, and health psychology. He is now in the final stages of dissertation completion. In medical practice, Mr. Richards attempts to integrate his expertise in psychiatry, psychological processes and therapy, and family medicine. He lives in Maine with his wife, who is pursuing her training as an interfaith chaplain, their two children, and, their two dogs and two cats. Scott has lectured on developmental psychology, psychiatry, psychopharmacology, and psychotherapy at several colleges and universities and joined the University of New England PA program in August 2010 as a full-time faculty member.

Research

Current research

For his Masters Thesis in psychology, Mr. Richards completed research on a chaotic model of Terror Management Theory. His current dissertation research focuses on a psychotherapeutic application of this model.
