Workforce Development through CEPH
CEPH’s public health, multidisciplinary, and interprofessional learning opportunities involve students from across UNE’s health professions programs and colleges. Through these activities, CEPH strengthens UNE’s relationships with external partners, builds a health workforce pipeline to underserved areas in Northern New England, and helps transform the way health care and public health is practiced.
The Maine Area Health Education Center Network
The Maine Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Network enhances the quality of and access to health care among underserved populations. We provide rural, interprofessional, community-based clinical training experiences for health professions students, encourage Maine youth and mid-career professionals to pursue health careers; support practicing health professionals with continuing education, and promote population and public health approaches to addressing current and emerging health issues.

Clinical Interprofessional Curriculum
The UNE Clinical Interprofessional Curriculum (CIPC) is a menu of learning activities designed for interprofessional teams of mostly graduate-level health professions students to be used in clinical training settings.
The curriculum offers a variety of collaborative learning activities that reinforce cross-cutting teamwork and communication skills; comprehensive patient assessment and care management strategies; and population health concepts including population health management, quality improvement, and health disparities, for example. When incorporated into health profession students’ clinical training, the CIPC can be a valuable tool to prepare future health professionals with a foundation in patient-centered care, interprofessional practice, and health equity.

Primary Care Training and Enhancement
Bangor
CEPH was awarded a five-year grant to continue interprofessional education from the classroom into the clinical setting, with an emphasis on rural health. UNE partners with Penobscot Community Health Care (PCHC), Maine’s largest federally qualified health center, to train UNE osteopathic medical, pharmacy, and physician assistant students, along with PCHC clinicians, on social determinants of health, shared decision-making, oral health in primary care, interprofessional practice, and health literacy.
Evaluation of the project includes:
- Number and types of activities students were involved in at PCHC
- Knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs among students and clinicians on the impact of the project
- Patient satisfaction of having students involved in their care

Northern New England Champions
CEPH was awarded a five-year grant to create a fellowship for physicians and physician assistants (PAs) practicing in federally qualified health centers in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. The fellows will receive training and mentorship on healthcare leadership as it relates to opioid use disorder (OUD) and medication-assisted treatment (MAT). They will then apply what they’ve learned by completing a healthcare transformation project related to OUD and MAT, and precepting UNE osteopathic medicine and PA students.
Evaluation of the project includes:
- Knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs among fellows on the impact of trainings and mentorship
- Outcomes of healthcare transformation projects
- Number and types of activities involving students

The Maine Public Health Training Center
The Maine Public Health Training Center (MPHTC) is a growing resource of educational training opportunities to help public health workers and others broaden their knowledge of critical issues affecting the health of Maine people. The ultimate goal of MPHTC is a healthier Maine. We hope to achieve this by improving the capacity, knowledge, and performance of Maine’s current and future public health workers. MPHTC was jointly developed by the Maine CDC, The New England Public Health Training Center at the University of New England, Maine Public Health Association, Muskie School of Public Service at the University of Southern Maine, and the Hanley Center for Health Leadership, with contributions from many other organizations statewide and across New England.
