Dwelling Place Installation: Sukkot (Tuesday, October 2nd at noon)

12:00 pm - 1:30 pm
Art Gallery
Asherah Cinnamon
Free and open to the public

NEW DATE AND TIME: Tuesday, October 2nd 12:00p.m.

Asherah Cinnamon creates environments and objects that encourage healing through action and interaction, using everything from intimate narrative to complex psychodrama and communal ritual. Influenced by the values and traditions of Judaism, “Dwelling Place” is a public art installation and sculpture created with found objects and natural materials.  The viewer is encouraged to engage in dialog about justice, forgiveness, grief, anger, hope, beauty, generosity, and humor.

The Dwelling Place will also be an opportunity for the community to join the artist and the Hillel of Southern Maine for an informational session about the art and the Jewish Holiday of Sukkot, with food and beverages, as well as at least one ritual for the Festival performed inside the structure with participation of people of all faiths.

A Sukkah is by definition a temporary shelter. It is designed to remind us that in our vulnerability it is community, tradition, and faith in something larger than ourselves that together create our real safety, not material possessions or fancy homes.

The structure was originally commissioned for the Hillel of Southern Maine in 2011 by a grant to the artist from the Linda and Joel Abromson Foundation and was installed on the USM Portland campus last fall for two weeks in October.

Objectives: Community Consciousness; Social Justice
