Competencies: Values & Ethics, Communication

This introductory session provides an overview of the federally qualified health center (FQHC) model, including how health centers are funded, how the financial model supports comprehensive primary care, and why interprofessional teams are essential to delivering high-quality, patient-centered care. Participants will leave with a foundational understanding of how financial sustainability, workforce, and clinical services work together to improve access and health outcomes in communities.

Participation may be applied toward the Interprofessional Honors Distinction application to earn a nationally recognized digital credential that highlights students’ collaborative team skills for excellence in clinical and community practice. All UNE students are welcome to apply. All requirements must be complete prior to March 1 of students’ graduating year: https://bit.ly/IPHonors

Presented in collaboration with: Maine Primary Care Association (MPCA) and UNE College of Business

“The payment model influences collaboration by shaping how providers bill and their productivity, but it often complicates teamwork due to varying guidelines across professions and lack of reimbursement for collaborative time. Despite these challenges, upholding patient-centered values involves advocating for patients' functional goals, working with other professionals to guide decisions, prioritizing client-centered care, and promoting value-based payment models that reward preventive and quality care rather than volume.”
– UNE Osteopathic Medicine student, ’29, who attended the collaborative CAIEP and UNE College of Business event ‘Business of Interprofessional Healthcare’ Nov. 19, 2025.
