Freshman Meaghan Tweedie wins UNE's Maine Blueberry "Welcome" Muffin Contest
Meaghan Tweedie, a University of New England first-year occupational therapy student, is the winner of UNE’s Wild Maine Blueberry Muffin Baking Contest, recently held at the Windward Cafe. Her warm, sweet and delicious blueberry muffin wowed the judges and landed her top honors.
Tweedie’s wild Maine blueberry muffin recipe now becomes the “Official UNE Wild Blueberry Muffin,” to be baked and shared with all visitors and prospective students who begin their visit with a stop at UNE’s newly renovated “Admissions Welcome Cottage” at the Biddeford campus.
Seventeen contestants entered the competition with the hope that their original muffin creation would take first prize: Clair Varner (student), Meaghan Tweedie (student & winner), Deborah Randall (student), Christopher Pezzullo (COM Faculty), Althena Cariddi (Environmental Health & Safety Dept.), Meghan Rochelo (Sociology Dept.) together with Trisha Mason (Study Abroad), Brittney Davis (student), Georgette Sutton (Switchboard), Denise Giuvelis (Pharmacology Dept.), Shawn Keough, (Business Administration Dept.), Deborah DuDevoir (Biological Sciences Faculty), Mandy Wertman (student), Elizabeth Bukvich (student), Sherri DeFilipp (Communications Dept.), Emily Zimmermann (student), Robin Sanford (WCC Library) and Sally Witham (ITS.)
UNE Provost Jacque Carter moderated a panel of esteemed UNE faculty, staff and student judges, who tasted and rated the muffins on overall appearance, flavor and texture. It was a challenging but rewarding gustatory process for the judges: Nancy MacRae (OT Faculty), Pam Morgan (Biology Faculty), Mary Potter (Sodexho), Ashlee Binette (student), Glen Ellen Roth (OT), Joanne Alaimo (Housekeeping), and LaRee Goulet (UNECOM Clinical Education). Students Mike Campinell and Brian Muldoon also assisted.
In addition to bragging rights and legendary status at the UNE Welcome Cottage, Tweedie received a $50 Williams-Sonoma gift certificate for her first-place prize.
