George Allen gives presentation at the 50th Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy

George P. Allen, associate professor in the College of Pharmacy, recently presented his work examining antimicrobial resistance in Salmonella Typhi at the 50th Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC) in Boston, MA.  Dr. Allen’s presentation was entitled, “Evaluation of azithromycin, ceftriaxone, and fluoroquinolone resistance selection in Salmonella Typhi using an in vitro pharmacodynamic model,” and included three Doctor of Pharmacy students from the Oregon State University College of Pharmacy as co-authors.

ICAAC is the largest international conference pertaining to antimicrobial agents, infectious diseases, and microbiology.  As part of this year’s celebration of the 50th ICAAC, a commemorative book, “50 Years of ICAAC, 1961-2010 – Contributions to Science” was distributed to conference attendees.  A presentation by Dr. Allen from the 40th ICAAC in 2000, “Evaluation of the mutant prevention concentration in Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae – Effect of varying fluoroquinolone dosing regimens on the development of resistance in an in vitro pharmacodynamic infection model,” was included in this compendium of notable scientific innovations and achievements throughout the history of the conference.

Dr. Allen earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences in 1998, then completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA, and a Fellowship in Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI.  He served on the faculty of the Oregon State University College of Pharmacy from 2001-2010, before arriving at UNE in July, 2010.
