Jesse Miller is one of the editors of The New Guard

Jesse Miller, creative writer and adjunct faculty member in the Department of English and Language Studies, is one of the editors behind The New Guard, a new annual literary review proudly founded in the South Portland neighborhood of Knightville.  The editorial team has packed the first 190-page issue with great fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. The New Guard is devoted to supporting writers through print publication, with a mission to publish newcomers alongside established writers. The inaugural issue features new essays by two great writers, Jaed Coffin and Bill Roorbach.

This first issue also features a segment called: "Writers to Writers: Fan Letters to the Dead," a collection of fan letters to dead writers, written especially for publication in The New Guard. Contributors to the fan letter segment include: Sven Birkerts, Adam Braver, Boman Desai, Annie Finch, John Golbach, Tom Grimes, Richard Hoffman, Maxine Kumin, Thomas Lynch, Josip Novakovich, Lewis Robinson, Afaa Michael Weaver and Scott Wolven.  The winners and finalists of a poetry contest were judged by former US Poet Laureate Donald Hall, and the winners and finalists of a fiction contest judged by Debra Spark, author most recently of Good for the Jews.
