Julia Furtado, sophomore applied exercise science major, crowned Miss Maine

Julia Furtado, a sophomore majoring in applied exercise science, was crowned Miss Maine on June 18 at the Crooker Theater in Brunswick.  Furtado, of Dayton, performed a classical vocal selection for her talent, winning a talent award and the Lifestyle and Fitness in Swimsuit award.

Furtado’s platform is Leadership Among Our Youth.  She has been involved with the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program, and her longer-term goals are to teach high school students what it means to be a good leader, how to lead, and why it is important to take an active role in leadership in schools and communities.  Furtado will represent the state throughout the next year and earns a spot at the 2012 Miss America Pageant in Las Vegas.
