Lara Carlson gives presentation at the 58th Annual Meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine Conference

Lara A. Carlson, Ph.D., FACSM, assistant professor in the Westbrook College of Health Professions, gave a talk at the 58th Annual Meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) conference in conjunction with the World Congress on Exercise is Medicine (EIM) in Denver, CO. Dr. Carlson’s research presentation was entitled “Upregulation of Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 After Resistance Exercise.” The vast majority of literature focuses on the contractile elements of skeletal muscle with limited information on the extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling. Her presentation focused on the role matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) has on regulating the ECM in skeletal muscle. MMPs have specific roles in muscle growth, and are important in the repair processes after injury or disuse myopathies.
