State media cover harp seal pup at MARC

The Portland Press Herald on March 11 and WGME, WLBZ and WCSH television news on March 14 and 15 ran stories on a harp seal pup that was rescued off the coast of Maine Feb. 23rd and is being rehabilitated at UNE's Marine Animal Rehabilitation Center. The animal is the first baby harp seal to be rescued by Maine Marine officials.

The pup was born in a cove in Sprucehead and was rescued by the Maine Department of Marine Resources. Normally, harp seals give birth on ice floes off the Canadian coastline. Marine scientists are trying to determine whether the birth in Maine was a sign of global climate change or a natural expansion of harp seals into Maine.
