Brian Duff gives MPBN post-election interview

Brian Duff, Ph.D., chair and associate professor in the Department of Political Science, was interviewed on the "Morning Edition" program of the Maine Public Broadcasting Network (MPBN) on November 5, 2014.

Duff was asked about factors that influenced the gubernatorial election, which was held the previous day, and from which Republican incumbent Paul LePage emerged victorious.  Duff commented that "the bear hunting initiative probably brought out a lot of conservative voters, and they broke for LePage."

Duff also attributed LePage’s win to the facts that the governor "managed to run a pretty disciplined campaign;" that Independent candidate Eliot Cutler’s eight percent of the vote likely represented votes that would have gone to Democrat Mike Michaud had Cutler not been in the race; and that Cutler’s presence obscured both Michaud’s strengths and LePage’s weaknesses.
