‘The Economist’ publishes letter by Anouar Majid

On July 26, 2014, The Economist published a letter to the editor by Anouar Majid, Ph.D., vice president for Global Affairs and director of the Center for Global Humanities.  Majid’s letter was in response to a previously published story “The Arab world: Tethered by history.”

In his letter, Majid notes that Morocco is “more liberal and stable than most of the ‘progressive’ republics created in the aftermath of European colonialism.”  Arab states, in contrast, he argues, will only “reverse the decline of their civilizations” when “the entire Islamic legacy [is] subjected to rigorous intellectual analysis, much like when Judeo-Christian traditions were scrutinized by the probing questions of Enlightenment thinkers.”
