‘Journal Tribune’ reports on UNE’s latest grants and strides in research
The April 30, 2014 issue of theJournal Tribune featured an article on UNE’s recent grant awards and advances in research.
The article features research by John Streicher, Ph.D., assistant professor of biomedical sciences in the College of Osteopathic Medicine and faculty member of the Center for Excellence in the Neurosciences (CEN). Streicher, along with Ian Meng, Ph.D., professor biomedical sciences and director of the Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) for the Study of Pain and Sensory Function, and Cassia Mizuno, assistant professor in the College of Pharmacy, received a seed grant from the Maine Technology Institute to investigate possible pharmacological treatments for dry eye syndrome.
The article also reports on new research by a team led by Streicher on chronic pain, noting that the team’s findings could lead to new options in chronic pain treatment.
Lastly, the article discusses a $245,000 grant that UNE received from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration National Marine Fisheries Service’s Saltonstall-Kennedy Grant Program to investigate ways to create a culinary market for spiny dogfish, a species prevalent in the waters of Maine and the rest of the northeastern U.S. A principal investigator on the project is Professor Barry Costa-Pierce, Ph.D., FAAAS, Henry L. and Grace Doherty Chair of the Department of Marine Sciences and director of the Marine Science Center.
