‘Journal Tribune’ reports on UNE’s latest National Science Foundation grant

The October 3, 2014 issue of the Journal Tribune featured an article on UNE’s recent award of more than $636,000 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for a project aimed at engaging science, technology, engineering and mathematic s (STEM) students by using innovative research projects on the Saco River.

Markus Frederich, Ph.D., assistant department chair and associate professor in the Department of Marine Sciences, is directing the project, titled “TURBO: The Undergraduate Saco River Biodiversity Observatory—A Long-Term Ecological Research-Style Research Experience to Enhance STEM Education.”

The article announced the award along with news that another NSF grant was received by Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in Boothbay, Maine. 

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, D-Maine, was quoted from a prepared statement announcing the grants.“These are fascinating projects to further our knowledge and exploration of the world around us in many ways,” she said. “My congratulations to both institutions.”
