Education Department’s Grammar Fair for schoolchildren featured in ‘Journal Tribune’
On April 20, 2015, the Journal Tribune reported on a Grammar Fair that was hosted by 26 UNE education students at Biddeford Intermediate School (BIS) on April 16.
The education students set up stations in the BIS gymnasium to present six-minute, interactive grammar lessons to rotating groups of fourth and fifth-graders.
The lessons tackled issues such as the difference between "who" and "whom," "whose" and "who’s," and "then" and "than" and gave instruction about rhetorical devices, such as hyperbole.
Lane Clarke, Ed.D., associate professor in the Department of Education, was quoted in the article. "It’s a really great way for my students to practice teaching and for these kids to practice grammar," she stated.
BIS principal Deb Kenney and Jeremy Ray, superintendent of Biddeford schools, were extremely pleased with the event. According to the article, Kenney said that she is hoping the Grammar Fair, as well as BIS’s relationship with UNE, will continue for many years to come.
Ray agreed. "UNE is a great supporter of our school department," he told the Journal Tribune. "It’s awesome."
