James Koelbl guest blogs for 'Next Generation Learning Challenges'

James Koelbl, D.D.S., M.S., M.J., provost and senior vice president of UNE, published an article as a guest blogger on the Next Generation Learning Challenges website, titled “The Practical Value of a Liberal Education.”

In his post, Koelbl discusses the question of value between broad-based liberal education and narrow, more career-driven educational paths.  He acknowledges the various factors that are important to both parents and prospective students when deciding what to study, and he argues that there are important skills to learn regardless of one's chosen major.

Koebl goes on to say that liberal education provides an individual with valuable abilities that will help them achieve success in any career path, such as:

  • Critical thinking and analysis skills
  • Innovation and creativity
  • Communication skills
  • The ability to work in teams and apply knowledge in new settings

He concludes his post by encouraging readers to put themselves in new situations and environments as a way to continually learn and grow.
