Steven Byrd, featured in Brazilian newspaper, publishes book of travel essays

Steven Byrd, Ph.D., associate professor of Spanish and Portuguese and director of Latin American Studies, recently published a book of travel essays titled “Outras Terras: crônicas e ensaios.” The essays, written in Portuguese from 2002 to 2014, are focused primarily on aspects of Brazilian and Portuguese culture but also include examinations of cultural aspects of other Latin American countries, including Mexico, Cuba, Ecuador and Peru.

The book includes accompanying photos taken by Byrd and by Holly Haywood, M.F.A., university photographer.

Novo Jornal, a newspaper in Natal, Brazil, featured an article about Byrd and the book’s release in its August 14, 2015 issue. The article discusses Byrd’s desired outcome in the United States from the book’s publication. “What I want from this book is to stimulate the learning of Portuguese [in the U.S.]… It is a language of fundamental importance,” he stated.
