WCSH features Meghan May's research on rapid method of diagnosing superbug
On February 20, 2015, WCSH (Channel 6) aired a news segment on the research of Meghan May, Ph.D., assistant professor of microbiology, on a new method of diagnosing patients with the so-called superbug—the deadly strain of bacteria that has been making headlines after infecting seven people in a California hospital, killing two of them.
May and her team of researchers are developing a faster way to identify Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE), which will allow proper treatment to begin quickly and could, therefore, save the lives of people who are infected.
She explained the importance of her research: “This is meaningful and this is important because it allows a physician to make a treatment decision within the time frame of an hour, as opposed to using an ineffective treatment for 24 hours and having a patient get sicker and sicker and sicker.”
