‘Addison County Independent’ highlights UNE dental externship site in Vermont

College of Dental Medicine

As reported by the Addison County Independent, a community newspaper based in Middlebury, Vermont, the College of Dental Medicine has selected Bristol Park Dental as a community-based externship site. Dental student Rebecca Filan (’17) has recently finished her training at the site. Fellow students Ben Higgins and Alex Kerbaugh completed their training at Bristol Park Dental earlier this academic year.

Spanning the final year of dental school, the Community-Based Education program introduces students to clinical practice in areas with limited access to healthcare. This year, the class of 2017 participated in a total of 85 separate 12-week rotations throughout 33 designated sites primarily in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.

Students benefit from this unique opportunity in several ways, as they learn how to provide care for diverse patient populations, attain real-world experience, witness firsthand the need for greater access to oral health care in Northern New England and experience the importance of social responsibility and leadership as a dental professional.

On May 20, 2017, 62 students will be awarded the doctor of dental medicine degree at UNE’s 182nd Commencement Ceremony. Founded in 2013, the College of Dental Medicine is the first dental college in Northern New England. Students in the inaugural class represent more than 20 different towns in Maine, 16 different states throughout the U.S., and Canada.
