Marilyn Gugliucci helps establish award-winning hospice home immersion project at medical school in New York

Marilyn R. Gugliucci, Ph.D., of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, was invited to present a lecture on geriatrics in medical education at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, Middletown, New York.

The talk comes as Gugliucci works with Athina Giovanis, D.O. ’07, assistant professor of Neuromusculoskeletal/Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine and Director of Interprofessional Education at Touro COM, to establish the UNE COM 48 Hour Hospice Home Immersion Project at Touro. While at Touro COM, Gugliucci met with the Orange County Hospice Home CEO and staff and the four Touro COM medical students who have volunteered to participate in the Immersion project with Giovanis.

In 2017, the UNE COM 48 Hour Hospice Home Immersion project was awarded the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Society of Osteopathic Medical Educators Innovation in the Development of Enduring Medical Education Materials Award. Since then, Gugliucci has been working with other Osteopathic Medical Schools to expand this life altering immersion project to other schools. It was deemed a success by the Orange County Hospice Home Staff and Touro COM medical students as the first two students completed the 48 Hour Immersion in late October, 2017.
