Students from the One World Dental Association, a College of Dental Medicine organization, have organized several educational initiatives in support of Oral Cancer Awareness month.

Throughout the month of April, One World Dental association has worked to spread the word through awareness ribbons, a Lunch and Learn seminar offering a CE credit and the creation of an informational video featuring Timothy Martinez, D.M.D., associate dean of community partnerships and access to care.

The Lunch and Learn seminar was presented by Jeffrey Doss, D.D.S., associate clinical professor in the College of Dental Medicine, with support from James Dunn, D.M.D., assistant clinical professor and Fields Farrior, D.M.D., M.S., associate dean of clinical education and patient care. Doss emphasized the prevalence of oral cancer at the interprofessional event.

“Oral cancer is three times more common than cervical cancer and twice as many people die every year.” Doss said. “We want to change that through early diagnosis. The world health organization recommends that everyone over 18 should be screened annually.”

Riddhi Daftary (CDM, ’17), president of One World Dental, said that the organization has worked to continue the conversation about oral cancer awareness.

“Information and education are key to perception, recognition and attitude,” she said. “We get the opportunity to be the megaphone to our community, sharing this knowledge with the public.”
