UNE student's Edible Main Street project making a difference in Westbrook

Allie Harvell, a University of New England student who will graduate from the Master of Public Health program in the College of Graduate and Professional Studies in May 2017, is making a difference in her community through an innovative edible public garden program.

Harvell is a Westbrook native and has collaborated with the Downtown Westbrook Coalition to plant vegetables in Blue Note Park on Main Street in Westbrook. The program, called, Edible Main Street, was featured in an article in the Portland Press Herald.

The pilot is based on a successful program in Norway, Maine. Harvey says the goal is to combat food insecurity by demonstrating the resources that exist. “The idea is for people to really utilize this resource and really promote the different areas that help people gain access to healthy foods.”
