UNE English professor Susan McHugh interviewed for ‘Audible Range’ article on animal emotion
Susan McHugh, Ph.D., professor and chair in the Department of English, was interviewed for and quoted in a February 14 article published by Audible Range, the online magazine of Audible, Inc., a producer and seller of audio entertainment, information and educational programming.
The article, “My Furry Valentine: Puppy Love and So Much More,” addresses the topic of animal emotions. It not only notes a growing body of non-fiction works that consider the emotional capacity of non-human animals but also recognizes a long tradition of fiction that features animals.
“We make books and stories and films about animals over and over again for a reason – because we know something is there,” stated McHugh, who is the author of the books Animal Stories: Narrating across Species Lines (2011) and Dog (2004).
McHugh is series co-editor of Palgrave Studies in Animals and Literature, the first academic book series devoted to literary animal studies. She serves as the managing editor for the humanities for the scholarly journal Society and Animals and is an editorial board member of Animalibus: Of Animals and Cultures; Antennae: The Journal of Nature in Visual Culture; Animal Studies Journal; Environment and History; H-Animal Discussion Network; and Humanimalia: A Journal of Human-Animal Interface Studies.
