UNE’s Cynthia Simon presents at Ignite 2018 Conference

Cynthia Simon

Cynthia Simon, director of the College of Arts and Sciences Internship Office, shared her expertise on student internships at the inaugural Ignite 2018 Conference. The event, sponsored by the Biddeford and Saco Chamber of Commerce and Industry, featured five speaker sessions focused on the workforce, in addition to a business trade show and hiring opportunities.

In her talk, Simon discussed resources and mentoring opportunities for local businesses and UNE students. She then defined position categories, including volunteering, service learning, internships, externships, and co-ops, as well as seasonal, part-time, temporary, contract, and full-time employment. Simon also provided advice on creating job descriptions that appeal to students.

“When businesses design student-tailored positions that fall under specific classifications, they are able to better access and recruit a target market of talent,” said Simon. “This also gives our students greater access to service, work, and learning opportunities available in the community.”
