Ali Ahmida authors chapter in United Nations report

Ali Ahmida, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Political Science, researched and wrote a chapter in the recently released Arab Governance Report III: Institutional Development in Post-conflict Settings.

The report was undertaken by a research team at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia.

This third edition of the Arab Governance Report introduces post-war best practices from international and regional experiences. It suggests strategies and policy recommendations for Libya and Yemen that focus on the immediate aftermath of the cessation of combat and a future political settlement.

The goal of the report is to help ensure inclusive transition and a consensus-based process of reforming governance structures and rehabilitating key institutions after a political settlement.

Ahmida authored chapter three “Institutions in Crisis and Transition: A Review of Political Science Scholarship.”

The chapter examines recent scholarship on institution building and good governance, and the origins and models of transition after civil strife in developed and developing societies.

Special gratitude is given in the report to Ahmida and three other authors for their contributions.

This is the fourth piece of work for the U.N. on which Ahmida has served as a consultant. Previous work includes assessing the U.N.’s role in Arab countries and addressing conflict resolution in Africa for the U.N. Security Council.
