Stephen Burt, M.F.A., chair and associate professor in the Department of Arts, has been invited to participate in the latest round of an artist exchange program between Maine and its sister state in Japan.

The Maine-Aomori Printmaking Society (MAPS) project started in the Fall of 2015, with an exhibition of works by ten Maine printmakers at the Aomori Art Pavilion in Japan. The exhibition was followed by a show at SPACE Gallery in Portland with prints by the Maine artists, ten Japanese artists and other work related to the Maine-Aomori relationship.

The project aims to build two matching collections of prints of all the work produced or contributed to MAPS for future exhibitions, educational purposes and posterity.

Burt's print “New Morning” has been shipped to Aomori for the October exhibition and will remain in the collection of the Munakata Shiko Museum.

Another one of his prints will be kept in the collection of Friends of Aomori.

A retrospect of all 120 prints in the MAPS collection will be hung at the Lewis Gallery at the Portland Public Library in fall 2021.
