Anne-Marie Davee, M.S., RDN, LD, assistant clinical professor in the Department of Nutrition within the University of New England’s Westbrook College of Health Professions, has been featured in the Bangor Daily News discussing ways to make nutritious snack choices during social isolation.

The article, “These tips will make your stress snacking more nutritious,” addresses our collective gravitation toward comfort foods and snacks amid the novel coronavirus pandemic. Foods like potato chips may feel reassuring to many of us during this time of uncertainty, but they do not contain many health benefits.

Davee recommended staying hydrated throughout the day to help curb snack cravings.

“Sipping on ice water through the day or a flavored water helps to curb that urge to be eating all day long,” Davee told reporter Sam Schipani.

She also recommended turning toward your favorite fruits and vegetables when looking for comfort, and to try eating smaller portions of your favorite comfort foods if you choose to indulge.

“I would just watch portion sizes and add colorful vegetables to your plate,” Davee said. “Have [comfort foods] be a treat once a week.”

Davee recently spoke with UNE News about how to healthily stock your home pantry during the pandemic, where she recommended buying hearty orange and green vegetables, a mix of lean animal and plant-based proteins, dried legumes, and canned goods. She also talked about food safety and sanitation, and recommended people wash all surfaces that come into contact with store-bought food packages and — most importantly — their hands.
