The University of New England Art Gallery in Portland is pleased to present “The Permanent Photography Collection: Recent Acquisitions in the Stephen K. Halpert Photography Collection at UNE.”

The omnibus exhibit features 70 recently collected photographic works selected by Stephen Halpert, curator of photography and steward of the Stephen K. Halpert Photography Collection at UNE. Established in 2016 through the generosity of Judy Glickman Lauder and Leonard Lauder, this permanent collection places UNE at the forefront of academic gallery collecting in the region in the discipline of photography.

Extending from work that is documentary in nature to carefully-composed tableaux, the work in the Stephen K. Halpert Photography Collection demonstrates a sensitivity to both place and narrative. Maine — Portland, in particular — exists as both subject matter and formal starting place, providing an anchor for work that ranges as far as Somalia, Togo, England, Spain, and Vietnam.

Halpert’s finely calibrated sense of composition and movement allows the work in this exhibition to form an unfolding narrative that speaks to the human condition. Introspective and noisy, dynamic and tranquil, these photos serve as a reminder that we all inhabit the same spaces with individual rhythms and perspectives.

Works in this exhibit were acquired through the generosity of Judy Glickman Lauder via the Stephen K. Halpert endowment. UNE is grateful to Judy Glickman Lauder and Leonard Lauder for their gift and to Stephen Halpert for his vision.

An open house will be held Saturday, Sept. 25, from noon to 5 p.m. Rain date: Sunday, Sept. 26, noon to 5 p.m.

The exhibition has been extended through Oct. 8. Hours are Thursday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
