An exhibition of paintings by New Hampshire artist Ted Johnson is now on display at the University of New England’s Biddeford Campus Center now through July 5.

Johnson creates ocean experiences with minimalist techniques. The pieces, selected from the artist’s “WAVES” series, showcase a strong a sense of vulnerability to the ocean’s raw force using a black canvas and contrasting colors of oil paint.

Such simple techniques offer dramatic effects in his works “Intense Sail,” “Night Sea,” and “Rocky Shore.” Johnson’s ultimate goal is to create complexity from simplistic forms of painting. Capturing motion with subtleties that differ with each subject are what attracts him to the medium.

“WAVES” is free and open to the public. Masks are optional indoors for visitors to UNE’s campuses. The Campus Center is located at 11 Hills Beach Road, Biddeford, Maine. Summer hours are Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturdays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sundays noon to 6 p.m.
