Mary Post. “The Parrot Fish.” 25.5x31.5 Alcohol inks on Yupo paper.

An avid artist for most of her life, Mary J. Post discovered the medium that called to her more than any other during the COVID-19 pandemic. An exhibit of Post’s work using that medium — alcohol inks — will be shown in the Campus Center through June 27. An artist reception will be held at the center from 5 to 6:30 p.m., Friday, June 6.

A former preschool teacher of 20 years who frequently incorporated her love of art into her class lessons, Post moved with her family from Long Island, New York, to Yarmouth, Maine, in 2018. At that time, Post began taking art classes in ceramics and drawing — exploring her love of bright, bold colors. She also made jewelry and sketched. But when she began to work with alcohol inks at the outset of the pandemic in 2020, Post delved deeper into her exploration of vivid colors: brilliant blues, oranges, and greens.

Post’s art is made using alcohol inks that are applied to Yupo paper (which has a thin layer of plastic that runs through the middle) after the paper is washed with rubbing alcohol. After the inks are applied in layers, Post uses alcohol to move the inks, thereby creating various effects in the color on the Yupo paper.

Post loves how the inks have a watery effect when combined with the alcohol, she said in an artist statement.

“My inspiration comes from the ocean because it is filled with unmatched beauty,” Post said. “The vivid colors of so many of the fish and creatures often go unrecognized, and I love being able to showcase them.”

Now the owner of the gallery, From Sea to You Designs, in Kennebunkport, Maine, Post displays her original art, prints, and home goods in her coastal Maine gallery.

The Campus Center is located at 11 Hills Beach Road, Biddeford. Hours for the summer are Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 6 p.m.
