I connect with students, patients, employees, and community members where they are in various stages of behavior change to engage in exercise. I view teaching as inseparably linked with research scholarship including rigorous training in the methods of developing, analyzing, and communicating new knowledge. Often the most powerful lessons are learned in informal discussions, office hours, health conferences, meetings, and encountering public health issues first-hand in the community. I view teaching as complementary to my research and public service. I find links between my courses and my research activities and community service. With over 10 years of professional experience in public relations and non-profit program management, in addition to research, instruction, and award-winning curriculum development, I’ve assisted with student practicum/internship placement, and CEPH and Carnegie accreditation requirements. I am a member of the America College of Sports Medicine, American Academy of Health Behavior, American Public Health Association (APHA) Physical Activity Section and serve as Communications Chair, Student Chair, an abstract reviewer, presenter, Student Assembly Secretary-elect, and I am on the policy committee. Additionally, I teach group exercise classes at Cleveland Clinic Akron General Lifestyles.

Research

Current research

I presented new methods for measuring trail quality and use for exercise using GIS and GPS at the American Public Health Association Annual Meeting in November.  I will present findings of place-based physician exercise prescriptions and referrals in March at the American Academy of Health Behavior Conference in Tucson, Arizona.  I will submit manuscripts for the each of my four areas of research this winter and spring.

Long term, I envision this research to come together in a career of using current partnerships and building new partnerships to test the delivery of placed-based exercise prescriptions and referrals with health care managers, human resource wellness programs, and local health, park and recreation departments to patients, employees, students, and community members.
