Deborah Hutcheon, DCN, RD, LD has worked in the field of nutrition and dietetics for over ten years. Prior to joining UNE as a Subject Matter Expert and Adjunct Faculty member in 2017, she served as a Nutrition Lecturer and the Dietetics Program Director at Clemson University (2014-2016) and as a Nutrition Instructor at Bob Jones University (2008-2014). During her teaching career, she has developed and taught numerous undergraduate nutrition and culinary arts courses in the areas of general nutrition, community nutrition, nutrient metabolism, clinical nutrition, food science, food preparation, and food service production. She has also developed and taught graduate nutrition courses in the areas of clinical nutrition, geriatric nutrition, and human metabolism. She currently works as a Clinical Nutrition Specialist at Greenville Health System (Greenville, SC), working in pediatric weight management with New Impact: A Healthy Lifestyles Program.

 

Dr. Hutcheon earned a Master of Science in Nutrition from Eastern Michigan University and a Doctor of Clinical Nutrition from Rutgers University. Her research interests focus on exploring the relationship between micronutrient intake and human health, factors and interventions influencing weight management (with emphasis on surgical weight management), and human metabolism and body composition. Dr. Hutcheon is actively engaged in research with the surgical weight management program at Greenville Health System (Greenville, SC). Her current research is focused on exploring the relationship between preoperative weight loss and post-operative outcomes in bariatric surgery patients. Dr. Hutcheon’s research has been published in multiple peer-reviewed journals including Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases, Nutrition in Clinical Practice, and Topics in Clinical Nutrition.

Dr. Hutcheon is a Registered Dietitian and Licensed Dietitian (South Carolina). She enjoys remaining active in the profession of dietetics by holding membership in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and by being a dietetics program reviewer for the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics. She has also served on the board of the South Carolina Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as the Scholarship and Awards Chair (2011-2014) and as Treasurer (2014-2015).
