Throughout my career, I have taught health promotion to a variety of people ranging from bankers in downtown Boston to remote tribes in Papua New Guinea. I also taught literacy and numeracy in the Peace Corps, leading to teaching adult literacy and English as a second language back in the U.S. This experience led to a deep appreciation of culture and literacy, and their role in health. It also led to work in health literacy, just as it was starting to emerge as a field, about 20 years ago. My area of focus is training, networking and supporting partnerships between health agencies and adult education programs. My goal is to help people of all backgrounds and abilities to access and understand health information and to use it to stay healthy.

Research

Current research

In one study, I am analyzing the content of a listserv to describe its role for professionals in the field of health literacy, and to identify current and past themes in the field. In another, I am examining data from the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) to determine why literacy and numeracy are stronger predictors of good health in the U.S. than in many other developed countries.
