What is the P.D. Merrill Makerspace?
The P.D. Merrill Makerspace is a fully-equipped laboratory for creating and building. For turning ideas into reality. For developing solutions to real-world problems.
That’s something that anyone can do. Whether you’re looking for inspiration, a creative outlet, research experience, or valuable career skills, the makerspace has something to offer every student. (It’s also a lot of fun.)
Come join us!
You don’t need to be a technology buff or a business major to contribute. In fact, Makerspace projects are stronger when the people who contribute come from a wide range of academic disciplines and have different interests.
That’s why we make a point of being accessible to all students regardless of program or major — reinforcing the UNE’s unique commitment to interdisciplinary and interprofessional teaching and learning.
Location and Hours
The P.D. Merrill Makerspace is located in the basement of Decary Hall. During the pandemic, the Makerspace is available by appointment for any project, personal or school-related!
PD Merrill Charitable Trust
The continued success of the Makerspace over the past three years has led to a new gift from the P.D. Merrill Charitable Trust that will be used to help increase the capacity of the Makerspace to support students across the University with an interest in innovation and entrepreneurship.

Maine Ideas Challenge
UNE’s Maine Ideas Challenge is an idea-stage innovation challenge that fosters the development of innovative and sustainable solutions to real-world social, environmental, and health-care problems.
Winners receive cash awards to help advance their ideas to the next level. You don’t need to be a business major or a technology buff to enter the challenge. All you need is an idea that you are passionate about or a desire to help out on a team.
Everyone has something to contribute, and every contribution is valuable—we can help you find a team that matches up with your interests.
Whether you’re an undergraduate, graduate, or online student, you can participate. Throughout the fall and spring semesters, we will offer workshops, seminars, and mentoring to help you develop your idea and prepare for the competition.
The P.D. Merrill Charitable Trust has been supporting the Student Innovation Challenge since 2016, with grants to support expenses and provide prizes.
